Alli or orlistat is an nonprescription medicinal drug used to help people lose weight. Studies have shown that Alli can aid people lose more weight than diet alone. The weight loss drug is meant for overweight adults age 18 and older who adopt a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet.

Alli belongs to a category of medications called lipase inhibitors. Such medications impede the guts from absorbing some of the fat in the foods that you eat. Specifically, Alli blocks about 25% of the fat that you eat. Fats that are not absorbed exit your body through your stools, or bowel movements. Some research data suggests that treatment with Alli helps reduce the amount of a especially serious type of belly fat, known as visceral fat. Visceral fat has been associated to numerous chronic, dangerous conditions, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.
